Property History

Two and one-half months after President Lincoln was assassinated, Morris Block acquired Lot 1, Square 30 of Beauregard Town located at the corner of St. Ferdinand Streets and America Street. In 1895, Mr. Block obtained financing from a savings and loan in Mobile, Alabama, in the amount of $1,574, secured by a mortgage on the property.

In 1897, this mortgage was foreclosed and the property was put up at a Sheriff’s sale, where it was acquired by Charles Gottlieb for $2,000.

In 1905, Mr. Gottlieb sold the property to Paul Peres for $3,000, who in turn sold it to John P. and Lelia Wax.

Mr. Wax died August 11, 1907 when the property was valued at $4,500. Mrs. Wax and her family continued to live in the home until 1958, when she sold the house and adjacent land to George Simon for $25,000.
